Fife, WA Tidbits

Fife, Washington is a small community that is mainly comprised of businesses that include by the side of the highway businesses, fast food restaurants, drive through smoke shops, an Indian Casino, motels, industrial and warehousing facilities, and automobile dealerships. The community is located just east of Tacoma. There are a large number of freight forwarding companies as the result of its close proximity to Highway 167, Interstate 5, as well as the Port of Tacoma. The tax base of Fife is comprised of property taxes, utility taxes, and sales taxes. Fife Heights, which is located on a hill just outside the incorporated limits of the community is a mainly residential area. To the southeast is the location of the community of Edgewood and immediately to the east is the location of the community of Milton. .

Fife is a suburb of Tacoma and is located in Pierce County. According to the census that was taken in 2010, the population of Fife was 9,173 people. In a 2013 estimate from the Office of Financial Management the population of Fife was 9,290 people.
The community of Fife is also located across the Puyallup River just off the tidal flats. The community of Fife was clearly going through a rapid change with rapid development that much of which was the result with the increased shipping activity at Commencement bay as well as the older truck farms converting their businesses to warehouses at that time.

The is still a hamburger business from the past, known as The Pick Quick next to the old highway primarily from a bygone period. The Pick Quick still remains in spite of the adjacency to the interchanges on the freeway and all of the fast food restaurants that are typical on the old highways. The Pick Quick restaurant is still considerably busy in spite of the cold rain. Their burgers are simply good as are their blue berry shakes and then one must brave the traffic for their journey home.

The community of fife was once described as being at the crossroads in the valley in the middle of a truck gardening and well settled berry growing district that is represented by a large dance hall that had a balloon roof, a series of shops, taverns, and markets next to the highway in 1940. The population of Fife in 1940 was 135 people. The year 1957 brought the official incorporation of Fife.

Fife felt the need to establish itself as more than an intermediate region between State Route 167 and Interstate 5,ut rather as an autonomous community as the result of the increased traffic volume when traveling between Tacoma and Puyallup.

A prominent attorney from Tacoma Named William Fife is the namesake of Fife. Mr. Fife was once a Lt. Colonel in the field during the Philippine Insurrection, the head of the national Guard in the state of Washing, and a Yukon prospector.

Although the sign still remains, the old motel across the old highway from the old days is gone. However, for those folks who know their old movies, it is a pretty good sense of humor.

Fife has grown into a center for retail, industry, and community opportunities from what was once a small farming community. Fife is conveniently located between the Port of Tacoma and the Seattle/Tacoma International close to the boundaries of King and Pierce Counties.

Fife is also a wonderful community to live in. Families are in love with Fife because of its miles of trail and parks to explore, free year round special events, and an award winning school district.

The community of Fife is the ideal place to do business with its responsive Chamber of Commerce, City Government, low tax rates, exposure to Interstate 5, and lack of a B and O tax. Fife covers approximately 5.7 square miles of land between the Puget Sound and the Puyallup River.

In 1957, the resident of Fife wanted to retain their idyllic community and control their own destiny when they voted to incorporate Fife as a town. However, the location of Fife between the burgeoning communities of Seattle and Tacoma as well as the close proximity to Commencement Bay presented problems with eminent domain that eventually brought about the transformation of the character of the land. There are documents of history that describe the transformation of Fife through that of the white settlers, who were farmer that worked the fertile volcanic soil while developing a close knit community of friends and family from the establishment of the Puyallup Indian Reservation.

As part of their curriculum for history, the school system in Fife will start teaching about the history of the local native Indians as well as the relationship between other governments and the Indian tribes. These courses are in response to a law in the state of Washing that was enacted in 2005 and encourages the teaching of American Indian culture and history in public school districts.
