University Place, WA Tidbits

University Place, Washington is located in Pierce County. This city was ranked 81st out of the 522 regions in Washington State that were ranked. The population of university place was 31,144 according to the census taken in 2101. The location that is currently known as University Place was selected as the location for the Puget Sound University, which became known as University of Puget Sound during the early 1890's. For the campus, the school bought some 420 acres. However they were forced to forfeit the property before they could establish the campus as the result of financial problems in 1893. Consequently, university was never moved. In spite of this fact, the region continues to be called University Place.

The community of University Place was established when approximately square miles of Pierce County that was incorporated became incorporated in 1995. University Place has long been a city that is proud of its unique quality of life and background, while it is still a young community.

In the past 200 years, there has been considerable development in the region, and the visual landscape has changed rather drastically. Nevertheless, in University Place, there are still some clues to the past. Pierce County was the home of the Steilacoom, Puyallup, Nisqually, Muckleshoot, and Squaxin, Native Indian tribes during the early 1800's. The property that has currently been developed as the Chambers Golf Course was being used for industry purposes by the middle 1800's. Since then, and prior to being transformed into the world class golf course that it is currently known for, it has been used as a gravel mine, a railroad center, and by the lumber industry.

University Place has been the home for numerous couples who wanted a great location to raise their families throughout the middle 1900's. One of these couples was by the name of Charles and Mary Curran. This couple established the Curran Apple Orchard. The orchard has now become a landmark in University Place more than seven acres is still remaining to this day and is one of the better parks in the City.

About a century after University Place was named, a discussion about incorporation was conducted by members of the community. There was a movement that began to push for local control of the government and it wasn't long before proponent opponent groups began to form. However, the proponents won out and passed a ballot measure that established nearly eight square miles of the formerly unincorporated Pierce County into becoming the community of University Place in November, 1994. Ever since the incorporation, the community, the City Staff, and the Council, have invested thousands of hours into making University Place what it is currently known for, which is a great place to play, work, and live.

These days, University Place is primarily a residential community and functions as a combination of a residential and business region that has Puget Sound for the waterfront. University Place home to the Charles Wright Academy and the Curtis Senior High School.
